Throughout the prophecy of the Kings series I have been impressed by the high quality of the prose, the excellent character building and the easy but gripping style of the narrative. Shadow of the Demon is no exception, there is a real sense of the dramatic in this concluding volume and the unique individual style becomes even more pronounced. The pace is spot on and the plot full of twists and turns that keep you on your toes and makes the pages flow through your hands as you hasten to seek the conclusion to the story. The characters and their development remain the core focus of the novel, largely the protagonist Kaplyn and his continued magical anomalies. The ending of the story is quite exceptional, poignant and more than a little bittersweet. Dragon Rider. The plot itself moves forward quickly and keeps the pages turning, one of the real strengths of this series is the emphasis on plot and character development with less time spent on the long background, world building that can sometimes stall the flow of the narrative. There are enough twists and turns to keep the interest and as with Legacy of the Eldric, the novel is very well written with a flowing script that is both refreshing and easy to read. Yes there are is a prophecy, dwarfs, demons and dragons, but the story is captivating, exciting and fast-moving and you will find it difficult to put down. David Burrows has added some nice touches to what could have turned out to be a run of the mill fantasy. In Legacy of the Eldric he has certainly achieved his aim; the characters are memorable and the plot is fast-paced and exciting. It is an opening chapter in a series that I look forward to reading the mid and end parts to. Tumarl is an excellent addition to the already strong cast but the most outstanding moment of the book was the long and brutal battle of CarCamel. The author impressed here as he focused as much on the little man as the hero. The narrative cleverly switched between many characters as the battle waged on and we experience death and loss, bravery and cowardice through the eyes of many differing people. Dragon Rider moves the story along well and brings the story to a very interesting knife's edge. The trilogy is a highly enjoyable series of books to read. If you were looking for comparisons in style and substance then the late Professor Tolkien and the wonderful Robin Hobb would come close. The narrative is at is strongest when dealing with the past, the creation theory is first-rate, well conceived and genuinely moving, and the way in which Kaplyn experiences the past-life of his shaol (a kind of guardian spirit), Shastlyn, is delightfully well described. The parts where Kaplyn battles with his very real inner demon make for compelling reading as the noble and caring man struggles with violent, cruel and tyrannical compulsions. ). While the writing is good, and the battle scenes are excellent, the true highlight of these novels for me, were the characters. Each were distinct and interesting. While it did take me a bit of time to absorb their personalities, once I did, I deeply cared for the outcome of their lives. Kaplyn, whom was the main character, was very likable, and Vastra, a wizard with a secret, was compelling all the way through. There was also a decent amount of character development, which is something I always enjoy. The Prophecy of the Kings trilogy is a fantastic epic. David Burrows creates a vibrant and compelling world which captivates his readers. The first book started a little slow but quickly grabs a hold of the reader. Burrows develops his characters well and by the end of the first book you feel compelled to keep reading to find out the outcome of the tribulations the characters must go through. The second and third books are equally engaging and the pace quickens with every page. I truly enjoyed this novel and would recommend to all fantasy fiction fans. (5 out of 5 stars) Cweller

I really enjoyed the story and found that the books were very easy to ready and very enjoyable. I felt that these characters all brought something to the story while still not making the story so complex that it was hard to follow. Mystical tale filled with fantastic action scenes, dragons, 3 princes, wizards, astral travelling, demons and tree spiders! Burrows has written an amazing epic fantasy that will have you glued to the pages. The author is a fan of LOTR and his trilogy is in a similar vein, yet is filled with original ideas that are unique to Burrows.
